Buongiorno, and welcome to a little project I call "Super Mario Forever!"
My goal is to play through and blog about every single entry in the Super Mario series over the next few months, hopefully finishing in time for the April 2023 release of Illumination's Super Mario Bros. movie.
I hope to provide lots of nerdy background information on each game, as well as providing context for not only the games themselves, but my relationship and experiences with each one.
I'm gonna start this with 1985's Super Mario Bros. on October 13, because I wanted to begin on the 37th anniversary of the franchise...unfortunately, I'd forgotten that the game was released on SEPTEMBER 13, 1985. My bad.
The games I'll be covering, in order, are:
- Super Mario Bros. (NES, 1985)
- Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (FDS, 1986)
- Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES, 1988)
- Super Mario Land (GB, 1989)
- Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES, 1990)
- Super Mario World (SNES, 1991)
- Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (GB, 1992)
- Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (GB, 1993)
- Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES, 1995)
- Super Mario 64 (N64, 1996)
- Super Mario Sunshine (GC, 2002)
- New Super Mario Bros. (NDS, 2006)
- Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, 2007)
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii, 2009)
- Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii, 2010)
- Super Mario 3D Land (3DS, 2011)
- New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS, 2012)
- Super Mario 3D World (Wii U, 2013)
- Super Mario Odyssey (NSW, 2017)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder (NSW, 2023)
The stuff outside of that (a category I've named "Super Mario Beyond") consists of:
- The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (TV, 1989)
- Super Mario Adventures (Comic, 1992)
- Super Mario Bros. (Film, 1993)
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Film, 2023)
In addition, I might be covering some spin-off titles (like Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Maker), adaptations (the DiC cartoons, the Super Mario Adventures comic), or perhaps relevant articles of interesting miscellany, but the overall focus is gonna be on the main Super Mario series.
I suppose your next question might be..."Who the heck are YOU?"
Oh, it wasn't? Ah well, I'm gonna tell you, anyway.
I, of course, am the Amazing Chris Godbey™!. I'm a web cartoonist, author of the comics Weird in a Can, and Draw, O Coward. I'm also a co-host on Sideburns & Cigarettes, a podcast about the Lupin the Third anime series. I also work retail as my day job, but who wants to hear about that?
But, most relevant to this blog, I've been a fan of Super Mario since I was three years old, and played Super Mario World on my stepdad's SNES in the early 90s, making it likely the first video game I ever played. Around the time I played that, USA Network was airing a compilation of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and Super Mario World cartoons titled Mario All-Stars, which I watched every morning before going to preschool, pretty much confirming that I'll be obsessed with this thing for life.
Until next time, my friend and I are saying "arriverderci" and we hope to see you soon! |
